Villa Volpe

Set in an exclusive secluded area bordering the towns of Ostuni (the white city) and Cisternino (a popular celebrity hot spot ), Villa Volpe was built out from a series of late 19th century trullo structures. Today, the restored conical buildings house the sleeping quarters of vacationers while additional modifications to the property allow guests to enjoy a dose of luxury in the Italian countryside.

TRULLO…

(plural, trulli) is a traditional Apulian dry-stone structure with a conical roof. Depending on the area, trulli are composed of either hard limestone or calcareous tufa, the walls of which are often treated in a whitewashed lime plaster to protect against drafts.

Each trullo typically houses a single room with adjoining spaces built out in arched alcoves. When not used as storehouses or field shelters, trulli were often grouped in clusters of 5, 12, or even 24 – with each cluster serving as a single family residence. The building type peaked in popularity in the late 1800s with earliest evidence of its form appearing circa 1700. Today, trulli are protected under the UNESCO world heritage law.
