Historical Gent Residence by Hans Verstuyft Architecten

To view this recent renovation of an historical Ghent home by the Belgium-based Hans Verstuyft Architecten is to feel something truly special. While the firm cites strong roots in a conditions-based analysis of program, site, budget, light… they also place equal importance on the more subjective, sense-based qualities of comfort, warmth, touch and just general feeling. As Verstuyft puts it, “Our inspiration is to think sober, to reduce. We think architecture is to last, and to give living new opportunities for each generation. Future buildings must have a soul that inspires the users and invites them to live…” Prepare to be inspired!

I once did a shadow internship with an architecture firm and got to see first hand how much work goes into a historical reno. The work they’ve put into this historical home is absolutely stunning. Their work turned out absolutely gorgeous!

The renovation was well done but the furniture doesn’t blend harmoniusly. The furniture is extremely sober, cold and not warm and inviting. There is an extreme contrast of the existing space which is simply exquisite with an extremely sober and simple not interesting furniture.
