Here’s a little detail that’s been getting some big love from yours truly lately – the disappearing vase. The concept is a simple one – take one clear vessel, fill it to the brim with water and voilà – What once read as a mundane vase transforms into an uninterrupted volume of glorious transparency. It’s a small adjustment from the status quo but the effect can be stunning.

The Shallows vase designed by Critiba Design + Direction is a perfect example of the disappearing vase phenomenon. Inspired by the concept of a flower blooming in a puddle, this crystal cylinder is is only complete when brimming surface tension creates a convex dome of water. The result – a near seamless column of transparency.

No water line here! Designer Betsy Brown maintained the gorgeous lines of her vase collection by filling them to the brim.
