We are on a ceramic love fest here at DPAGES and to kick off this Wednesday morning I’ve gathered some clay-based gems from Brooklyn based artist Elaine Tian of Studio Joo.
Elaine comes from an educational background in Design Studies – in which she holds a Masters degree – and Sculpture. This led to a career in graphic design which, for the better part of 16 years, relegated her to a work spent behind the screen of a computer. A few years ago, finding herself missing her days in the studio, Elaine decided to try her hand at ceramics and the results have been nothing short of beautiful.
Elaine cites the Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi-sabi (an appreciation for things that are naturally imperfect or incomplete) as the guiding principle behind her unique collection of lighting and ceramic vessels. Her portfolio is available for view via her online site studiojoo.com and shop studiojoo.bigcartel.com. The studio does custom work as well.
