CLASSIC DESIGN MEETS…

contemporary chic in this French influenced family room designed by Heather Hilliard for San Francisco’s 2019 Decorator Showcase. Currently running until May 27th, the showcase is being held in the 18,000 square-foot historical mansion Le Petit Trianon, built in 1904 by textile magnates Marcus and Cora Koshland. Influenced by the couple’s love of French architecture, the residence was modeled upon the original structure at the Palace of Versailles and once even hosted an extravagant Marie Antoinette themed costume ball to commemorate its completion. Today, the lavish mansion has been updated by the participants of the 2019 Decorator Showcase in a variety of sophisticated and playful ways.

FOR HER EIGHTH…

year participating in the Showcase, Hilliard designed the family room– which she calls L’Appartement– as an homage to the home’s original French inspired design with a tasteful mix of antique heirlooms, classic French furniture, and modern pieces from France’s contemporary design vanguard.

UPON ENTERING…

the room, visitors will immediately spot a colorful ‘Flower’ Coffee Table by contemporary French architect and designer India Mahdavi alongside modernist chairs by early 20th century designer René Gabriel and the iconic Polar Bear Sofa designed by Jean Royère in the late 1940s.

COUNTERBALANCING…

the heady minimalism of these influential pieces, a nearby 18th Century black and gold Louis XV commode and a colorful 18th century tapestry titled “Ruins in a Park” give the room a touch of France’s ornate, gilded past. Custom bookshelves by Fabian’s Fine Furniture, flooring constructed of European Oak in a herringbone pattern, and a striking fireplace in black granite complete the image of a sophisticated French getaway in the heart of San Francisco.
