Sound waves transcribed into wax.

A recent RISD graduate, Erica Sellers has created a chair and side table out of music. Well, sort of… For Erica’s 2012 thesis project, she took digital readings of sound waves from the song Symphonia IX – by Grimes. She then took these 2D curves and oscillations and converted them into digital 3D surfaces in the computer modeling program, Rhino. She sent the resultant digital 3D information from her computer to a CNC milling machine, which carved out the sound wave derived topography onto the European Beech planks used to form her furniture. Lastly, the chair and table were finished with an India ink stain, sealant, laser cut with the name of the artist and song used, and inscribed with the “Landscape of Sound” logo. D loves emerging talent and this is such a beautiful concept. Bravo Erica!
