POSTFOSSSIL is a Zurich based design collective which creates home furnishings and accessories intended to function not only in today’s world but also in a post fossil or oil-less future. While this may seem an extreme design constraint to have to work under, it has bred some fascinatingly clever pieces, not he least of which is First Light by designers Anna Blattert and Daniel Gafner.

This cord free floor lamp derives its power from a weight and cog wheel apparatus, which is anchored at its apex and displayed handsomely through a smokey glass shade. The whole thing functions like a grandfather clock, requiring the conscious act of winding, to keep the lights on.

While a post fossil world may seem lifetimes away, when you think of the extended power outages experienced during major storms like last year’s Hurricane Sandy… you have to wonder why we don’t all have one or more of these in our homes.
