IN THE HEART…
of the ancient city of León is an immaculately composed modern flat. Renovated by Madrid-based architecture firm OOAA, this minimal abode was designed with an emphasis on contrasting patterns and iconic designs. At the same time, the designers were attentive to the harsh climate of northern Spain. By using organic materials and natural light, the team managed to create a sparse yet comfortable space that feels warm and welcoming, even in the dead of winter.
THE FIRM…
designed the apartment’s interiors to complement the renovation, choosing a calming, neutral palette that emphasized beiges and grays. At the same time, the designers enlivened the space by placing contrasting black and white furnishings next to each other. The result was a harmonization of the apartment’s architecture and furnishings, which provided continuity throughout the home.
THROUGHOUT…
the house, the designers relied on light woods that merge effortlessly into the apartment’s subdued palette. In the den, white oak flooring extends upward, forming a long bench and lounge area, reflecting light from the oversized windows that line the back of the room.
SET AGAINST…
the den’s white oak is a black lacquered Pierre Jeanneret chair. The piece, which provides contrast and balances the room, is a version of the iconic Chandigarh chair designed for Le Corbusier’s famous utopian city. Variations on the teak-and-cane chair reappear throughout the house, lending the rooms a sense of continuity.
BEYOND…
the main gathering area lies the master bedroom. Here, the designers mirrored light wood on the floor and ceiling, while charcoal pinewood doors bring out the room’s bold character. Complemented by a Jeanneret-inspired bench, this bedroom evokes the serenity and elegance that characterizes the flat’s design.
ANCHORED…
by iconic furniture pieces, this testament to warm minimalism stands as an elegant and modern home in an ancient city.
