London-based artist Natasha Law (sister to Jude Law) is best known for her seductive, at times provocative works of art, which depict women in varying stages of undress. Her particular brand of fresh color combinations, scantily clad ladies and a sophisticated yet slightly pop-art slant has yours truly feeling summer all over and itching for a piece to hang on every summer home wall I can get my hands on.
Natasha’s process is a labor intensive one which most often begins with a line drawing of a live model. That line drawing then gets zoomed in, cropped and transferred onto an aluminium panel. From there, it is a matter of applying numerous coats of household gloss paint, sanding down then painting again. The painting process occurs within a completely dust-free environment and the result is an almost liquid like finish which captures a slouch, a bend, a curve in flat swaths of glossy color.
In interview with Vogue, Natasha offered some insight into the process she’s been fine-tuning since the late 90s, “It’s become really important for me that I work with my friends as models, as the resonance of that affection and relationship is hopefully there,”. It’s a relationship she conveys in varying degrees of grace and awkwardness as her bikini and knicker-clad forms strip, lounge, or simply stand pensively. “I like the slightly ungainly moments of undressing where you’ve got the vest pulled over you and you’re sort of headless…”
Natasha’s work has garnered her a clientele ranging from Gwyneth Paltrow and Estee Stanley to Samsung and Tiffany & Co. She is currently represented by Eleven Fine Art in London and Voltz Clarke in NYC. What do you think?
