A few weeks ago I stumbled onto this blog post by the Boston interior designer, Linda Merrill. The topic is an all too common story of a would be client looking for the full services of an interior designer but expecting those services to come for free, or close to it. Maybe it is a lack of thinking things through, but I think Zaha Hadid may have said it best, “All the arts I would say are not respected enough. They are very difficult. They think it’s some sort of a whimsical, artistic thing…” In reality it takes an enormous amount of time, effort and fine tuning to create a truly good design and execute it.
Well, a couple of weeks following her blog post, Merrill decided to take a proactive stance and publicly shed some light on the topic of design services, and how they are billed, in an article for Fox. For all those who manage the rather complex task of how to charge for your services and the often equally complex task of explaining this to your clients, Merrill’s articles are worth a read.
