This unique, creature-like lamp prototype created by Netherlands based designer, Paul Heijnen, made its debut earlier this month at the Salone del Mobile 2013. Manufactured from CNC-cut ProFi Deck (a wood-plastic composite) and then hand assembled, the Hyperion re-imagines the standard lamp structure in the form of an insect like robot.

With numerous joints allowing for a flexibility of movement that closer resembles that of a living creature than a piece of furniture, the Hyperion can be manipulated into a nearly endless array of stances, ranging from a low crouch to a tip toe stand.

In an intentional move to celebrate the mechanical workings often hidden in the design process, the lamp was left in its raw state with each functional hinge and joint adding to the overall insect/robot like aesthetic. The current prototype (shown here) stands about as tall as a floor lamp but a final, full-scale six meter steel version is slated for completion by 2014.
