Born in Santa Catarina, Jader Almeida, at 34, has already established himself as one of Brazil’s hottest young designers. His experience in the industry began early, at the age of just 16, with an apprenticeship in industrial manufacturing. Inspired by the experience, Almeida pursued a degree in architecture and soon took a job with furniture specialist LinBrasil – where he gained invaluable experience working with the local woods and leathers commonly used in some of Brazil’s most iconic designs. Today, Almeida credits these early experiences as catalysts to his growth as a designer. “To know the process, how things work and how to perform the operations, gave me the base and security to start to design my first pieces.”
Almeida began producing his first furnishings in 2004, and in the years that followed, he has turned out more than 150 pieces of furniture, lighting and accessories. Although this could easily stand as another designer’s life’s work, Almeida is just getting started. He explains, “Evolution for me is a constant. Every new project has addition of new ‘layers’, the result of constant research and experience.” In the process of this ‘layering’, Almeida integrates cutting edge technologies with traditional craftsmanship – consistently pushing material and form to new levels of artistry. Already providing inspiration to a new generation of designers, Almeida himself takes inspiration from Scandinavian and Brazilian modernism… “I seek to create products with durable values. Approaching the legacy of the masters, but looking ahead, thinking that the choices of today will be the reflection of tomorrow.” Shown here is just a small sampling from his ever-growing portfolio.
