A PAIR…

of longtime New Yorkers with two young children decided to build in a leafy Westchester town and called upon interior designer Tamara Magel, based in Palm Beach and Sag Harbor, N.Y., to imbue their freshly minted suburban dwelling with a sophisticated city vibe. Magel did it by filling the bright, expansive rooms with a mix of iconic-but-not-cliché vintage furnishings, sleek contemporary pieces and a curated collection of serious art by Donald Judd, Louise Bourgeois and other luminaries.

IN THE…

living room, a plump 1960s sofa designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa, a pair of chrome and suede Wassily chairs and a white leather daybed anchor the space.

THE DRAMA…

of entering the high-ceilinged front hall is heightened by the bold geometric form of a black pedestal table.

THE WELL…

appointed kitchen is design purity incarnate, with white-painted custom cabinets, a countertop of sleek black marble and a center island lit by a trio of conical pendants from BDDW.

IN THE..

den, pale wood custom cabinetry flanks a sleek fireplace while a long contemporary sofa of Magel’s own design and a pair of comfy shearling chairs provide ample seating.

EXTRA…

large windows and handsome built-ins, incorporating a luxurious bar of black marble, make an attractive backdrop for a rectilinear platform sofa, a supersized leather and wood armchair and a small marble table from Cassina.

A ROUGH…

hewn stone sink and gold tone fixtures in the powder room, along with the delicately curved FA 33 Mirror by legendary Italian designer Gio Ponti, achieve perfect decorative pitch in the powder room. Graphic floor tile adds a lace-like punch.

WOODLANDS…

wallpaper from Rebel Walls gives the nursery the aspect of a fairy tale.

THE MASTER…

bath features a pale custom vanity and gold toned fixtures from Waterworks. The vanity top, floor and even trim around the stall shower are made of Breccia marble, famed for its colorful veins.

A TALL…

bed from Restoration Hardware commands the master bedroom, along with a white Womb chair by Eero Saarinen. Art by the British painter Cecily Brown delivers a lighthearted dose of color. As elsewhere, the impeccable details, including the slender brass Austere-W Wall Lamp that tap into the heart of a true minimalist, really shine.

ONE…

amenity you’ll never find in a city apartment: a grand, light-flooded mudroom with a soaring ceiling and abundant storage. It’s enough to make an urban family decide that suburbs rule.
