Bronze Age Chair by Tjep

The Amsterdam-based design studio Tjep. has recently launched a new line of sculptural furniture aimed at bringing awareness to human-induced disasters such as climate change or a nuclear melt-down. Entitled Bronze Age, the limited edition collection of chair, lounge and chaise are made entirely from poured bronze and call upon a traditional, labor-intensive, handcrafted process.

Designer Frank Tjepkema explains, “I wanted to create something totally opposite to the technology driven trends… such as 3d printing. I like the idea that bronze is precious and is therefore implicitly sustainable. It is either preserved or remelted but never discarded. Who knows… maybe these pieces contain a couple of remelted ancient bronze swords!”

The result is a combination of rough-hewn visual delicacy, in contrast with a mirror polish finish and inherent physical weight. Be sure to have a peek at the video below to see how the chairs transform from fragile wooden models into gleaming bronze works of art.
