Founded by designers Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves, the São Paulo and London based firm, Studio Swine focuses on design through the process of material innovation and sustainable systems, all while maintaining a strong focus on the aesthetic result. This approach to design has never been better demonstrated than in their most recent project – the São Paulo Collection.
Inspired by the 1950’s tropical modernist movement in Brazil and the native flora of the area, the collection consists of a quirky yet lovable series of LED bulbs, floor lamps, shelf lamps, lounge chairs and coffee tables.
Standing Light – H 150cm W 70cm D 70cm Pine wood, Bottle Bulbs, Fabric Cable.
This chunky charmer was constructed by piecing together sustainable wood off-cuts collected from a carpenter’s workshop and then hand turning the parts into the many armed cactus you see above.
Coffee Table – H 43cm W 100cm D 75cm Sand cast aluminium, Glass.
Each aluminum cacti leg was made though a process of sand casting actual cactus plants obtained from the city’s flower market.
Lounge Chair – H 58cm W 81cm D 74cm Sand Cast Aluminium, paint.
Available in a variety of colors, this aluminum chair takes its pattern inspiration from an overlapping of tropical palm leaves.
Bottle Bulb: H 20cm W 10cm D 10cm (average) Handblown bottle, brass, LED, fabric cable.
Cluster: H 60cm W 40cm D 40cm Handblown bottles, brass, LED, fabric cable.
These bulbs are made from recycled bottles, which are hand blown into a series of six different shapes. Each bulb is outfitted with brass fittings and a rod wrapped in LEDs.
