NESTLED AMONG…

the leafy streets of Manhattan’s covetable West Village neighborhood, lies Mark Zeff’s recent transformation of a classic 1869 town house. Stripped of its original Victorian-era details years before, the once grand home had been divided into eight studio apartments until a young family of four tapped Zeff to restore it to a modern version of its former glory.

THE TOP TO BOTTOM…

renovation took three year to complete and encompassed a complete gutting of the home. With the final floor space measuring in at 4,000 square feet, Zeff carved out extra space by excavating the cellar to allow for higher ceilings and bumping out the back facade by four feet.

WORKING WITHIN…

a long, narrow floor plan, windowed only at the far front and back… the team coaxed sunlight into the home’s center via a combination of techniques, including newly open floor plans, enlarged back window/walls, and glossy Venetian plaster ceilings designed to reflect and refract natural light.

WHEN FACED WITH…

replacing the original moldings and flourishes that graced the home in years prior, Zeff took a more pared down approach, opting for new neoclassical moldings and trims.

WHILE THE FINAL…

interior falls beautifully into the present, echoes of the past can be found throughout – from the blackened metal details on the first level to the classic marble bath on the upper level – the sum result is a perfect reflection of Zeff’s aesthetic; a flawless balance of history and fresh modernity.
