A 1930s HOME: maintains its roots while stepping into the present

This significant 1930s property has undergone a number of incarnations. The original Edwardian home was converted into apartments in the 1930s and later into a family home in the 1980s. Most recently, it has undergone both a renovation and restoration by Kerry Phelan Design Office and Chamberlain Javens Architects. Located in Middle Park, Melbourne, Australia, just opposite the beach, the goal was to preserve the existing structure along with its original 1930s art deco details and craftsmanship while also adding more relaxed living spaces with better access to the pool and garden. Challenged to maintain the structure’s original footprint, the architects met this requirement with the addition of a third level. Materials were selected to provide an understated and “visually soft” environment that would work in harmony with the home’s sea, sky, and garden views. What do you think?! Photos by Derek Swalwell.
